SUMMARY: With continued scrutiny of equity compensation – the cost, dilution, complexity, and effectiveness – companies are under pressure to ensure that grants of equity to employees are creating a reasonable return on investment.

Fred introduced the concept of behavioral economics to equity compensation professionals during the 2008-2009 financial crisis and as a keynote session at GEO’s 2009 Annual Conference in Paris. His book chapter in GEOnomics 2009 (available here) spurred a global discussion on the topic and resulted in some companies redesigning their program accordingly. He has continued his exploration of the concepts of behavioral economics and how they can improve the effectiveness of equity compensation programs.

While many have focused on the communication and perception aspects of behavioral economics concepts as they apply to equity compensation, Fred believes there are proven applications for the design of equity compensation programs as already demonstrated around the world in the design of pension plans, savings plans, and healthcare benefits.

The September webinar on behavioral economics covered the key concepts (recording available here) in easy-to-understand terms and provided examples how these ideas have been implemented in other fields.

This webinar will discuss specific program features – forms of equity, vesting schedules, timing of grants, choice - and how these grants influence employee behavior but, more importantly, how employee behavior influences the grants themselves.
