Communicating Share Plans: Are We Making Any Progress? The notion that communication is always “the last bullet point of the presentation” may accurately reflect its status in overall share plan design, implementation, and operation. We all agree it’s important, but are share plan participants really getting the necessary communication to ensure the plans are meeting their objectives ownership behavior, value creation, attraction and retention? Recent changes in external communication to investors, through SEC disclosure rules, has brought the issue to the headlines yet after months of document drafting some feel companies are failing, again, at these communications. Can internal communication to employees be doing any better? Fred’s discussion with Mark Sheppard of Copperfield Communication covers the topics of communication effectiveness and ROI, the challenge of communicating “value” in light of legal constraints, the role of technology in communication including the web 2.0 trend, and the important distinctions between plan communication, financial education, and business education for share plan participants.
