Recreational Opportunities

Why travel all the way to Arizona and not take some time to enjoy some of what the southwest has to offer. To that end, we are pleased to offer several recreational activities on the morning of Wednesday, September 14. Arrive early and join our golf tournament, go horseback riding, hot air ballooning, kayaking, or visit the Desert Botanical Gardens.

GEO'S GOLF TOURNAMENT


GEO’s first ever Golf Tournament will be held right at the Westin Kierland Resort & Spa’s magnificent golf course on the morning of September 14. This is an excellent opportunity to network with fellow attendees prior to the Forum’s official start. This tournament will be nine-holes shotgun-style.  

Tee Time: 8:00AM  (please arrive at least 45 minutes prior to tee time to ensure the tournament begins on time)
Approximate End Time: 10:30AM
Fees: $65 per golfer; $35 golf club rental

HORSEBACK RIDING


Whether you’re a cowboy or a city slicker, it’s time to saddle up. And we’ve got the horse for you!  Relax as our professional guides take you on the most scenic horseback riding trails in Arizona.  Enjoy the breathtaking scenery as you wander by flowering cactus, rugged mountains, and abundant plant and animal life during your ride.  This scenic trail ride meanders through the lush Sonoran Desert, and gradually climbs to grassy mesas with soaring cottonwoods, sandy washes, and spectacular views.  A true Southwestern experience!
 

INCLUSIONS:

  • Round trip transportation via deluxe vehicles based on four hours
  • Professional wrangler guides
  • One and one half hour trail ride
  • Bottled water at the stables
  • Not recommended for expectant mothers, individuals with serious health disorders
  • Helmets available on request
  • Weight restrictions apply

Suggested attire for this activity includes:  long pants, close toed shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen, and hats

HOT AIR BALLOONING


No ruby red slippers required for participation, but this is an adventure! From the moment you lift off from one of our Sonoran Desert launch sites until the ceremonial touch down, the sights and sounds of the landscape below will leave you breathless. Unfolding before your eyes will be 360-degree views, blue skies and picturesque mountains in the distance. As the balloon rises, you can expect to see jackrabbit, quail, roadrunner and coyote at home in their lush desert landscape. If lucky, you will spy deer, a family of javalina and perhaps other more exotic desert animals.

You’ll enjoy the ride from the comfort of a handcrafted wicker basket in the company of an experienced pilot. All the while, our ground crew will be tracking your progress so we can greet you with flutes of bubbly and a beautiful table laden with a sumptuous breakfast upon landing – a centuries old tradition. And finally, to prove you are no mere mortal, you will be inducted into the Ballooning Society and awarded the Certificate d’Ascension En Machine Aerostatique. Don’t forget the camera!

KAYAKING


Kayaking in the desert? You bet! Equipped with plenty of water and sunscreen, the adventure begins at the water’s edge. You’ll experience the delight of an Arizona desert river decorated with our colorful sit-on-top kayaks that line the shore. The lead guide will conduct a safety and skills clinic and then you’re off! You’ll have a great deal of flexibility in how far and how fast you want to paddle. No experience needed! You’re in control as you kayak past the scenic banks and desert beauty.

DESERT BOTANICAL GARDENS TOUR


The Desert Botanical Garden, a living museum of desert plant life and one of the nation’s only science centers dedicated to the desert, desert plants, ecology, and conservation. The Garden hosts more than 10,000 plants and 3,500 different species of cacti, succulents, trees and flowers presented in a series of trails. The Desert Discovery Trail leads you to the Cactus House and Succulent House. The Plants & People of the Sonoran Desert Trail is a one-third mile, hands-on trail that illustrates how Sonoran Desert plants have been used by people for centuries to provide food, and shelter. The Sonoran Desert Nature Trail is a one-quarter mile trail that affords views of the desert butte. The fourth trail, the Center for Desert Living, showcases desert landscaping displays, vegetable and herb gardens and the Desert House exhibits.
